Synthetic wigs refer to wigs made out of plastic or plastic-like fibers. For people who are looking for an affordable and realistic option, a synthetic wig might be the best choice for you. Compared with human hair wigs, synthetic wigs are less durable and are very sensitive to high temperatures, and cannot be straightened using a hair straightener. Therefore, synthetic wigs require special care so they don’t frizz, flow, and look natural. We will tell you some useful methods to straighten your synthetic wig.

The Preparations Before Straightening Synthetic Wigs

Firstly, get a Styrofoam wig head which is made out of white Styrofoam. Put the wig head on it so the hair strands can hang loosely and secure it on the wig head with pins. Just push a pin right through the top of the head, at the temples, along the sides, and the nape. You can use either sewing pins or T-pins. Then, brush your wig with a wide-tooth comb to remove detangles.

Ways To Straighten A Synthetic Wig

Due to the plastic materials of synthetic wigs, exposure to higher temperatures can damage them significantly. But there are many synthetic hair wigs in the market which are an exception to this rule. These synthetic hair wigs are heat-resistant. So, make sure the wigs you want to straighten are heat-resistant.

1. Hot Water

First, prepare a large pot and boil a large pot of water. Use a meat thermometer and hold the water at between 180 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. Never boil it any hotter, or the fibers will melt because of the too high temperature. Then pour the water over the wig from the crown, and allow the water to flow down the length of the wig. You have to be careful enough to avoid scalds. And if the wig is extremely curly, you may have to pour several pots of water to achieve a completely straight wig. Then leave your wig in the air until it is completely dry. Please be patient because it may need several hours according to its length and thickness.

2. Bathroom Steam For Gently Straightening

Put your wigs on the wig stand and place the wig stand in the bathroom. Close all the doors to trap as much steam as possible. Shower in hot water for some time until the room has steam. Then take a wide-toothed comb or a wire wig brush to comb your hair gently from the front ends. When the steam starts to build up, take your wig out of the room, and then transfer it to a cool and dry place. Next, use a hairdryer for extreme straightening.

3. Portable Steamer

Plug your portable steamer to preheat it, and bring it close to the wig stand when the steamer is hot enough. Pay attention to the distance between the wig stand and the steamer to avoid damage to the fibers of your wig. Then, Section the wig into some segments, brush each one and turn the steamer to the segment. Do this strand by strand until the entire segment is covered. Repeat this process 3 or 4 times until the wig is fully straightened. After your wig is completely dry, apply some leave-in conditioner to make the wig soft and easy to comb. You can also spray some hair serum or sheen on it.

4. Flat Iron

Before starting to straighten your synthetic wig, check in with the manufacturer to know if your wig is heat resistant. Plug the flat iron and allow it to get heated. Adjust the temperature between 223°F to 250° F, because you won’t want your hair to get scaled. Then just brush the hair gently from bottom to top. After brushing the entire hair, pack it into a high bun. With the tip of a tiny comb, bring out a small section from the back of the hair. Gently comb the section, moisturize a bit, and place the flat iron on it from the roots. Keep dividing the hair into sections and straighten until you get to the top. After the wig has been dry completely, apply some styling gel to the wig to restore some lushness.

5. Hairdryer

Gather the hair except for the bottom part into a loose bun at the top and fix the bun with a hair clip. Spray the bottom layer with water to keep the fibers from overheating. Gather a part of hair from 1-2 inches wide. Set the hairdryer to a warm heat setting. Then move the comb/brush and hairdryer downwards at the same time. You can repeat this process 2 or 3 times.

Conclusion

Even if the wig is heat-resistant, you have to keep the heat at a little. But if the synthetic wig is not heat resistant, you can use other subtle methods of straightening such as steaming. Do know any other methods to straighten a synthetic wig, welcome to share with us.
